  Subject: Stillwater Pond, Connecticut

Submitted by Pski's Angling Adventures (ip 66.159.173.246)

Date Fished: 11/23/2003
Water Temperature: 46
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Another great day to be out on the water. Hit little 100 acre, Stillwater Pond in Torrington from noon till 4pm with my buddy Mike. He's moving to South carolina next week, (on the shores of Lake Murray!)so, it would probably be my last time fishing with him, around here anyhow. Wind was coming from the south at 0 - 3 mph. Water temp at 45F

Worked the west shore, north of the ramp and hit a lot of downed wood with a Jig & Pig from 1 to 8 foot of water and never got a bite.

Moved out onto some deep water near the original river channel and started marking some deep fish. I threw the 2.5" Grub at them at never had a bite. Normally, you can get some perch or bluegill to tap anyhow.

Along a steep gravel shore, there was two big trees crossing one another. I threw my jig to the left and it landed about 2 feet off target but, after the first little drag, a nice solid strike produced a 2 1/4 pound largemouth. This was on a 7/16 bass Stalker jig in brown with a Lunker City Piggyback in Chocolate Green craw in about 6 feet of water.

At this point, we hooked up with our buddy BillyBass and hung around shooting the breeze on a beautiful Novemeber afternoon. Bill told us of some stumps on a creek channel turn. As we headed for this area, I located a hump I haven't fished in years. The hump topped off at about 5 foot, and at the 6 foot level, just as I started dragging the jig, another solid strike produced a largemouth almost three pounds.

We moved again to some deep water on the East shore looking for cover in the way of lots of downed trees, some old weed beds and some minor points. All these spots looked great but provided us with no fish.

As the sun started setting, and the temperature started dropping, we went back to the trees that gave us the first fish. Mike had a great oppotunity to work those trees but it gave up nothing. We then moved back to the shallow hump a short ways away and worked the top of the hump that was covered in old weed. Again, nothing on the top or along the deeper sides of the hump.

Now time to call it quits with only two bass to our credit. BillyBass was predominetly throwing a Jig & Pig also and got one bass about 14 inches and snapped off another. Not a great fishing day but a gorgeous weather day with good company. The long range weather forecast has it as fishable weather. Hope to get out again over the Turkey Day holiday.
