Water Clarity: 2-3 feet Spent 3 hours fishing the canal in an area surrounded by house construction and golf courses. Caught 2 Largemouth with a 5" Intimidator Willow-stick in Pearl, dropping and lifting with the canal's current. Both went about 16". I got rousted out by a state policeman, so I followed the canal a couple of miles further and had to fish a little more. On the eighth cast hooked a monster. Since the cement canal is only about 15' wide and about 4' deep (it is very, very long however), the fish took off like a shot down the canal. Played it for 3 minutes and finally saw what it was. I expected a Largemouth, but was shocked to see a HUGE smallmouth. I've never heard of a smallmouth being caught in the lower California desert, but there she was. Played her out and then had to drag her up a 6' cement embankment on 8 lb. line. Got her to the berm and lipped her. She measured 21" and weighed 5.25 lbs.! To think I've fished for smallmouth all my life, spent tons of money flying to remote Northern spots, and all I had to do was go to my local storm drain and catch a whopper. Go figure!
