SUBJECT: Navigating the STICK MARSH

Submitted by Clint Morrow (68.205.164.107) from FLORIDA on

I am new to fishing the farm and the marsh. I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on running/navigating my boat thru the numerous stickups and tree stumps.

I find myself becoming extremely afraid to run on plane once I am out of the canals on the eastern and northernmost perimeters of the stick marsh side.

How far up thru the farm can you run before you should be concerned? I have found that it seems to get shallow and the stickups and stumps become more prevailent once the major east-west canal is passed over.

Thanks in advance
-Clint Morrow

    Clint,

Do not run the north end of the Stick, and since you are new to the lake you are better off running from the cut at the ramp over to the east wall and then proceed south in the canal to the canal that seperates the 2 lakes. This route will take you about 5-7 minutes longer to get the south end of the Farm, but could save you from lots of trouble. There are many of us who make the trek across the Stick Marsh, but you must be aware of the water levels before doing this. Currently water levels are fine. I would not recommend doing this until you can follow someone a few times or ride with someone who knows the safe route. As far as the Farm goes, if you draw a diagaonal line from were the shack used to set over to the southeast corner you can safely run to the north of that line. The stumps come out the farthest on the west side and gradually retreat as you work east. The distance you can run to the south is also determined by water levels.

Way to go Stan! He's new here. He doesn't know where the shack "used" to be. LOL. Best way until you get to know the place is follow Stan's advice. In the farm figure you can run about 1/2 way down it. If you take your time and find the pump house you can look due west for where the shack used to be. Use caution south of that imaginary line. BE VERY CAREFUL! There are many floaters and stumps under the water. Follow someone till you get used to it. Email me before you go the next time and if I'm going out I'll show you where you can run. donwillis2@hotmail.com There are usually guides out there around 6 am and any of them will be glad to give you info. By the way, how are you doing Stan??? Still around here???

you and I both know that all guides are NOT created equal. Folks, there are several "seasonal guides" who DO NOT know where they are running!!! I have witnessed on several occasions, so called guides running in areas that are idle only. I once saw a guide almost eject himself and his clients out of his flats boat when they hit one of the roadbeds towards the South end. This was during the severe drought we had about 5 years ago. Ever see a boat go from 30mph to zero in .25 seconds??LOL He doesn't guide there anymore.

The most important piece of navigational advice I can give to anybody is to NEVER EVER follow someone you don't know. There's a good chance he knows less than you do. Get some solid advice from someone who knows the Marsh and don't deviate from that advice, as in following a moron. When in doubt, IDLE!!!

Follow the advice: e-mail or call if you have doubts - both Steve and Don know where they are going.

Don, wrong Stan. Stan D. is who I think you are thinging of.
