SUBJECT: New to Birmingham

Submitted by Ryan (68.185.251.40) from ALABAMA on

I'm new to Alabama and of course new to Birmingham. I don't have a clue as to where to fish. I don't know what lakes are close and what lakes produce fish and how to get to the landings on the lakes. If any one could please help, I would greatly appreciate it!!!!

Thanks fellas!!

If you have a boat your in heaven. A dozen lakes or so within an hour and a half. Sure your like it here. Tell everyone weather too hot and muggy, people are mean, fishing terrible. They don't need to know... LOL Best wishes

From Birmingham, the Coosa River lakes are popular, as well as Smith Lake and Guntersville, and all of these are within an hour and a half from B'ham. If you are looking for big largemouth, go to Guntersville, see the fishing reports page and you'll see how popular this lake is, it gets a lot of traffic, but is huge, so it can handle it. For big spots, go to the Coosa. Logan Martin is very popular and easy to get to, but some of the smaller lakes, Mitchell and Jordan, get get less pressure and have some monster spots. Lay Lake is on the Coosa, and is known for both spots and LM, it has a more grass than the other Coosa lakes. Smith Lake is a little out of place here in the South. It is a mile deep and crystal clear. It can be a good numbers lake, as there are a lot of small fish in the lake. The guys that learn it, though, will tell you that there are also some very big fish there as well-at one time the world record spot came from this lake. If you want smallmouth, you are a little out of luck, but not totally, as you have to go to the Tennessee River in NW Alabama. Wheeler near the dam, Wilson, and Pickwick are all known for their world-class smallmouth, but these destinations approach 2 hours from B'ham. This is not too far for a special trip, but it is too far for me to make every weekend. Hope this helps

    Hey,

Welcome to Birmingham. There are tons of places to fish around here that are not really popular with the "bass boat" crowd too. (This is not a knock on bass boat owners. There are also lots of other places too.) Just a few: Lake Purdy, Cahaba River, Bayview Lake, Inland Lake, Warrior River. There are so many you can go crazy trying to fish them all. Drop me a line for more info. sales@tomssound.com
