    Lowrance HDS vs Elite

Besides the HDS screen, what is the real difference between the HDS 5 and the Elite-5 DSI Gold?

On the surface it would appear that it is DSI?

I know the HDS is enabled for networking and Structure Scan, is the Elite-5 DSI capable of Structure Scan? Does the HDS-5 have DSI? Does the HDS-5 need the Structure Scan for DSI?

Confused as the Elite-5 DSI Gold is $649 and comes with the Navionics Maps, and the HDS-5 is $699 and comes with inland lake maps. Is there a difference in the mapping too?

Todd, can you help?

John

John, both the Mark and Elite DSI units are just that - DSI (downscan) only. Yes, HDS units are fully networkable (NMEA 2000 and Ethernet), whereas Mark/Elite are stand-alone units, although they can communicate via NMEA 0183.
Screen color resolution is less for Elite (8-bit) vs HDS(16-bit) so a little less detail shown for Elite. Same goes for sonar power and internal memory, less for Elite 5. The HDS is available with Insight mapping, and Elite just has basemap mapping. Elite 5 has one year warranty, HDS 5 has two years.

With the addition of StructureScan, all HDS units have sidescan and downscan. Only HDS units are compatible with StructureScan.

The "Gold" with the Elite series provides a custom 2GB Navionics Gold micro SD card with coastal/offshore coverage of US and Canadian waters along with coverage of The Great Lakes, Alaska, Hawaii, the Bahamas and over 125 major Canadian lakes.

I'm rigging a new boat and trying to decide....
