SUBJECT: # 400: Carp flies

Submitted by jim (24.4.253.20) from OHIO on 5/14/2001 6:45:00 PM

there are some carp in a pond up the street from my house that I would like to try to catch. I just don't know what to try. I use bass flie and sometimes bluegll flies all the time with no success. The only one i ever caught was on a green marabou streamer type fly. any help will be appreciated. Jim

    Jim,

It really depends on what type of carp your talking about. This time of year what we call a buffalo hits the really shallow water hard and spawns. The dorsal fin is commonly well out of the water. They eat seeds and small crustaceans. I have heard of people taking a kernel of corn, placing it on a small hook, and throwing that with a fly rod. There are a few books out on catching carp with a fly. Sorry I don't know the names. Try a library. Good luck

My best fly for common carp is the Rubber-Legged Dragon ( http://kje.home.mindspring.com/rl_dragon.htm ). Spot the carp feeding on the bottom, throw fly well forward on long leader, & when fish gets within a foot or two, twitch the fly (& hang on!).

Another possibility - they may be grass carp. Very tough to hook & land. Fly must imitate grass, seeds, or blossoms when they're feeding on top. Here's one - http://kje.home.mindspring.com/grass_carp.htm

    basically anything green will do.

    they hit on green nymphs/streamers/wets

in australia they are considered absolute vermin. try to burley them up and then cast and retrieve thru the food column. or id their beat and then try a green nymph and work it slowly. see the book CARp on the fly

I fish for carp on a fly on a regular basis. I make and sell my own carp chum and carp flies. The surest way to catch carp on a fly is to chum them up and throw them a fly that mimics the chum. I make these types of flies as well. A lot of times it can be automatic.

Please e-mail me if you would like to try some of the carp chum and chum flies.

    Take care
