SUBJECT: # 4165: Hoyt Bow Review

Submitted by Steve (64.136.27.227) from TEXAS on 9/21/04 6:17:00 PM

I am looking at a Hoyt Fast Flight bow. Has anyone shot one of these and do you care to give me your review? I understand that Hoyt had several Fast Flight models of bows. This one has the 3 inch round wheels, not cams. I am undecided. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about these bows?

you are talking about a late 80s-early 90s model Hoyt? I remember when they first came out (a good friend and employee of my brothers proshop bought one) and they were kind of like a handmade European automobile, everyone had heard about them but few actually had seen one or had the honor of "test driving" one.

Realistically the bows are'nt that fast by todays standards, but for their time they were pretty dang good. What is the axle length and let-off of the bow you are looking at? The ones I was familiar with were longer (over 40") and typically had 50-65% letoff so they were able to be fired by hand or a release.

I suppose if you screwed the limbs all the way down (assuming it would get at least 65#s) then backed them off 1/2 turn and assuming the buss cable and string are new you could probably get into the 225-230fps range. Carbon/graphite arrows with a short rest and light tips (85gns or less) should help get the most from the bow.

I cant remember for sure but I want to say they were very expensive bows for their day (seems like I remember a price of $400-$600, that was ALOT of money for a bow 10-15 years ago!). If the bow you are looking at doesn't have much use and has been properly stored (that being in the cool and with the limbs backed off) then you would be ok with spending about $100-$150 for the bare bow. Used compounds for the most part have resale that is deplorable. The exception is modern Mathews, Hoyts and a few other top quality "speed bows of exceptional quality" less than a few years old. Many such bows still bring 1/2-3/4 of their current, new replacement price.

Good luck and enjoy the old Hoyt, RA

I just resently bought a Hoyt Super-Tec and couldn't be happier with it's performance. Red is correct in that they are on the expencive side, the bow alone was $669.00. I had them put the micro-adjust sight pins and a drop away arrow rest on it. I have the bow set up with a 28" draw lenght and the draw weight is at 60#. I shoot carbon supreme 350 customs with 100 grain broad heads and my arrows travel at 272fps through a chronograph. In my opinion that just ain't to shabby.I've owned PSE, Bear and Browning bows in the past and have shot High Country as well as Mathews. All are fine bows and will get the job done. Personally I like the Hoyt set up best because it's most comfortable to me and the micro adjust sight pin requires no tools to to fine tune your sights. Find you a pro shop who is willing to work with you to set up several bows and test drive all of them. Find one that suits you best then purchase the best you can afford. Good luck with it.

I believe Richard and Red are correct. I believe that the bow that you are looking at is somewhat outdated. I am not sure how much you are looking to spend but I bought my mathews MQ-32 off of ebay for 350.00. Of course it is not the latest greatest bow on the market but it suites my needs. When I purchased mine it came with sights, stabilizer, bodoodle rest, hard case, the only thing that it did not come with is release and arrows.

The bow that I was shooting previously was an older style Browning with wheels (no cams) like you are taking about, and let me tell you the first time I shot a mathews it was like driving a cadillac compared to the Model T that I was shooting. I Richard stated above I have heard some very good things about the latest Hoyt bows.

A friend that I hunt with had a Hoyt Razortech given to him, he is currently shooting a Mathews ultra 2. He told me that the Hoyt shoots as smooth or smoother than the ultra 2. He gets 320 FPS out of his ultra 2 and about 308 out of the Hoyt.

Anyways, if you are wanting to get into bow hunting and have a little extra cash laying around I would try and get a bow that was made within the past 5 years or so. GOOD LUCK

Recently bought a Mathews Outback, and was going to take my quick tune drop away rest off of my old bow and install it on the new one. Then it hit me. The old rest wont work since the new bow has the cable roller guide. I tried to find on-line which rest will work. Im sure they have a quick tune drop away that will work with the bow. And i honestly dont want to call my local pro-shop, since the guy who works there thinks he invinted bow hunting and really isnt intersted in helping anyone except the regulars. Anyhow, does anyone know which model to use on this particular bow.
