Looking for information on fly fishing the Brownsville Texas area

Am planning on a trip to Brownsville to visit my Uncle and have not been there before. I wanted to do some fishing and my Uncle says people fish tarpon right from the beach. I have not fished Tarpon before but like most foolish people am willing to give it a shot. ;) Though I should say I am an experienced fly fisher with 30 yrs under my wading belt as well as prior saltwater experience in both the northwest for Salmon and in Florida for Snook, reds, croakers, etc.

I would greatly appreciate any information that can be provided from best season/months for fishing, general locations to explore, equipment I should bring, etc.
