SUBJECT: # 2488: Venice ,Louisiana fly fishing question

Submitted by mikee (152.163.188.66) from TEXAS on 10/15/02 10:48:00 PM

My brother and I are driving over to Venice marina in Louisiana to spend the night and fly fish out of our owne boat"unguided trip" 10/26/02. Does any one have any suggestions of areas close to the marina thats easy to find we can fish? We will be in a 21' Kenner that will float in 16" of water. Also are there any specfic fly patterns/color that work better than others? We have gold spoon flys ,copper heads, clousers, seaducers, decivers and an assortment of top water patterns. Any input is apprecated. You guys on this page have always come to the rescue in the past, hope some one out there has fished this area in the past. As always thanks in advance, Mike

Mikee,I use basically clousers in the passes color depends on the water clarity. Opening night works real well if you use soft plastics which means to mimic that type of color in your flies at times. The Wagon wheel is shallow which means I use epoxy spoons if I do not see reds tailing and flexo crabs if the reds are tailing. At Sandy Point rigs I use clousers and deceivers. If I see specks I will change to poppers on the top which is hard to beat. If not I use a brim cork cut in two and shape it like a popper and put a clouser or deceiver under it(almost as fun as topwater). You can also try laflyfish.com the guys on the board have alot of good ideas. Bottom line if the conditions are right at Venice the fish will almost hit anything.

My brother and I went this past weekend aganst my better judgment. 370 miles one way from my home. Fished saturday until 2:00pm then "T" storm moved in so we hung it up for the day. I had one bass hit a dalburg and that was it.We threw spoons crab patterns clousers & poppers.Actually we never saw a tailing red the whole day. We fished the pass A loture area, the friends we met over there were catching a few reds and specks on conventional tackle. Sunday morning we went past the wagon wheel and fished yankee bay and some of the cuts leading into the pass.Saw 3 reds with there backs out of the water. I poled my brother in casting distance but the wind was strong and the cast was off target, no fish. We got one more shot, one of the reds came withinn 10' of the boat and stopped so my brother doodles his crab pattern in front of the red. The red turns on the bait picks up the fly and spitts it out just as fast and swimms off. We were just snake bit this trip. The weather is looking really bad back towards new orleans and coming our way so we call it a day and head back to pack and go home. It rained all the way back home, Venice to bridge city TX. I just guess we paid some more dues on this trip.By the way the water was muddy muddy muddy except for the yankee bay witch had 1' visibility, I wish we would have gone there the day before. Thanks for the replys, Mike

I have only had one bad trip there in all the times that I have gone. It is a place that you really need to learn from an experienced person and then build upon the areas. This time of the year it is usually good though the rain probably made it really hard to go after them on a fly. Many time I have run hard to find good water to fish with a fly rod on days like that and it has taken me almost all day. Hope next time you come down may you have a very sucessful trip.
