Anyone have any advice for fishing around Akumal Mexico? I will be there 14-21 Apr and was interested in bone and/or sail fish. Thanks in advance for any info!

The sails tend to be funneled in between Cozemel and the mainland a month from now. It might be a little early for flyfishing for them BUT my best guess would be to head straight out from Akumal and work my teasers north toward Play Blanca. You might hit the Cancun Marina and nose around to see if you can get some updated info.

Thanks for the info. Opted for bones off north east end of Cozumel in some very nice looking mangro flats/lagoons. Very windy and tide was very low but managed to land four bones and a couple sea perch. Was happy for first time bone fishing.

I was down in Akumal durring the summer and the bone fishing was great. Didnt even have to drive down to Boca Paila. If you stay right on half moon bay there was little pods of bones rooting in about 6 inches of water. They are really hard to get because they are only about 10 feet from the shore. Never hooked one on a fly there but did get one on a small shrimp jig. It's also real rocky so be careful. Also about ten miles south of akumal on the major highway there was a little private lagoon owned by some restaraunt that was happy to let me fish. This place is a mangrove flat. Its actually pretty deep, maybe 2 or 3 feet. With many potholes. They also said that they catch snook in the fall. And I could believe it. I think the resteraunt was called oscar y lallos or something like that. There should be signs on the road for it. Anyways we hooked three or four there on gotchas. So in the probably 4 hours we were free to fish, we caught four. Which I consider good considering it was our first time bonefishing, and it was free. Good Luck

We stayed at Las Villas which was right next to half moon bay. I ran into an american kid with a fly rod who stated he had hooked around 10-15 bones right next to where I was staying. I was snorkling over that way and thought I had spooked a few but was unsure. Anyways, talked to a few locals and they stated they were there. So if go down that way, take a pole w/ some shrimp patterns. Tight lines

On more tibit that I forgot to mention was the guide. I went out with Alberto and Nacho Euan out of Cozumel. The fish all over that region and have exceptional knowledge and experience of all species to be caught. If your going down that way, give them considerartion. You will not be disappointed.
