SUBJECT: # 2770: running lines for shooting heads

Submitted by Beck (68.37.36.85) from PENNSYLVANIA on 9/12/04 2:13:00 PM

Braided or Mono? I want to change out the running line on my 9wt outfit, it's showing some wear and tear and I don't want to start losing heads. I currently have it spooled with braided monofilament and was told that I will get more distance with a mono running line. I don't have a problem with distance now. I can toss 90 feet with just one load of the rod. I am concerned about when a fish hits and I have 40 or 50 feet of mono laying in the basket that I need to get on the reel. If mono is the way to go what brand? and what test? I don't throw anything big (cotton candy's) with this outfit. It's my bluefish rig. Thanks, Beck

I've been using 30# braided mono as running line for year and it's great. Easy to work with, shoots very far and not many tangles.

The down side is it's like a buzz saw on wet fingers so tape up well!

Oh, That's the truth! I tape with duct tape anymore. It gets some looks but it holds up. I think I'm just going to respool with the braided mono. I just can't see all that mono in the basket not bird nesting in the cold. I like how braided mono handle's and I can get it back on the reel so the drag can do it's job. I catch most of the blue's right past the wash anyway when there chewing. Beck
