SUBJECT: # 2807: Good basic reel

Submitted by Sea Aggie fly guy (165.95.49.106) from TEXAS on 8/19/05 10:12:00 AM

Just a general question. Who makes some good fairly basic reels (saltwater use). I'm sort of a minimalist the less there is on the reel the less there is to go wrong.

Take a look at the Ross Evolution. It is a $300 reel, but worth the price. It is amazingly light and still more than adequate.

I have a Tibor Everglades (sinking line) and a Billy Pate (floating line) that I switch between. If I had to buy another rod setup I would seriously contemplate the Evolution reel.

Don't screw around with the Orvis Large Arbors...

I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the direction.

Almost any reel is adequate. Right now I am using a new Pfluger Trion. It is pretty slick and cheap too. I used a Pfluger Medalist for everything, including some large Tarpon for lots of years.

Don't rule out the STH Cassette reels. Easy and cheap to change lines on.

I have a Penn International that is too dang heavy.

Check out the Valentine multiplier too. Fastest line pick up on the market and a darn fine reel to boot.

I'm fishing out of my kayak more and more often. I wouldn't want to take my Winston rod into harm's way.

The new Pfluger Trion 8 wt with the Trion reel is a fantastic rig for not a lot of money.

Flyfishing has become a Yuppie Sport. Flyfishing ain't magic and in some situations, I'll kick a spinfisherman's butt real hard.
