SUBJECT: When I arrived at Lee's headquarters following the

Submitted by John Bell Hood (74.167.150.225) from TEXAS on

Battle of Antietam, I was asked, "Where is your Division?"

I replied, "Dead on the field."

  1. Sammy #10958 from TEXAS says Cmon Scout it's 2009
Arguably one of the best brigade and division commanders in the Confederate States Army, Hood became increasingly ineffective as he was promoted to lead larger, independent commands late in the war, and his career was marred by his decisive defeats leading an army in the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign.

Let it go, make your own future instead of simmering in the stew of the past.

    Sam

  2. John Bell Hood (74.167.150.225) from TEXAS says Dang, first I lost my arm at Gettysburg and
then I lost my leg at Chickamauga. That cuts down on a man's effectiveness. Gimme a break.

  3. Sammy #10958 from TEXAS says No doubt the man had balls
but that doesn't make a great leader. Get a grip.

Hood rashly sent his men across nearly two miles of open ground without the support of artillery. His troops were unsuccessful in their attempt to breach the Union breastworks, suffering severe casualties in an assault that is sometimes called the "Pickett's Charge of the West". Historian Wiley Sword wrote that there is "evidence Hood expressed his displeasure over yesterday's fiasco [at Spring Hill] and may have suggested to ... his officers that he was concerned about their willingness to manfully fight on an open battlefield. ... If not outright punishment for their behavior on November 29th, the assault at Franklin would be a severe corrective lesson in what he would demand in aggressive behavior." Those officers that he deemed most responsible for the oversights at Spring Hill were assigned prominent roles in the frontal assault against the enemy fortifications.[8] Hood's exhausted army was unable to interfere as the Union force withdrew into Nashville.

Unwilling to abandon his original plan, Hood stumbled toward the heavily fortified capital of Tennessee, and laid siege with inferior forces, which endured the beginning of a severe winter. Two weeks later, George Thomas completely defeated Hood at the Battle of Nashville, in which most of the Army of Tennessee was devastated. It was later reorganized by General Joseph E. Johnston in North Carolina to defend against Sherman's Carolinas Campaign.

However, you and I know, if the last name had been Spillman, there would of been no historic record. Why, because the little men cooking grits and washing dishing didn't account to be much more than white trash damn near slaves, eh.

    Sam,

Not the Colonel Samuel Maxey of the Confederates.

    Suck on it beatch, lol.

  4. Bro (76.2.37.5) from FLORIDA says sammy... calm down..

you're getting in over your head.. the internet isn't your educational friend here and that damn sure ain't Ethan "Scout" Edwards you're banging posts up against..

"little men cooking grits and washing dishing" BRRRRHAHAHAHAHA

  5. Bucket from OKLAHOMA says Make ya a deal, Sam

You tell me who sniffer2k is and I'll tell ya who General Hood is. Fishboy can be an intermediary to exchange email addresses if ya want. LOL

  6. Wackoman from Mexico says Hood is the conditioned air man. Sniffer, I don't know but I bet he can lick his own nuts.
    I miss Whopper. Do y'all?

  7. Bucket from OKLAHOMA says Heck yeah I miss the Whumper

Bro took him out at the knees one day and Whumper has rarely been seen since. He had the worst case of BDS I've ever seen so he might not have made it.

  8. Sammy #10958 from TEXAS says Well maybe it
tweren't but it had been so long since I smacked him around I thought I'd take a shot in the dark.

Bucket, you'll have to waterboard me to get the info. lol

    Sam

  9. Mudfish from FLORIDA says Wrong, Genl. Hood. Read your history.
General Jackson asked you where was your division, and you replied "dead on the field". It was not General Lee. And the conversation took place in the West Woods adjacent to The Cornfield, not at Lee's HQ.

  10. Shelby Foote (74.167.150.225) from MISSISSIPPI says It did happen in the West Woods. General Nathan (Shanks) Evans
asked the question, not Jackson. And it happened while the battle had nearly 10 hours to go. General Hood didn't say that Lee asked the question. Thanks for correcting the error with the time frame and location. You have to forgive General Hood's memory recall. He's older than dirt.

  11. Mudfish from FLORIDA says General Hood should have retired after losing his leg...
...instead of sacrificing all those poor boys at Franklin. He was in a lot of pain, and prolly high on morphine, but it was a waste of brave soldiers.

  12. Bro (76.2.37.5) from FLORIDA says yeah I regret killing off the Whopper..
I really liked Vhapplers.. he had a damn good sense of humor and was completely blind to scarcasm.. that's a rare gift..

another one I accidentally kilt was Doc from Texas.. me and Jim Lively put him in a long running rope-a-dope and when he finally figured it out he got seriously pissed and left the board.. I always hated that..

another accidental head shot of mine was that Jack Brannon fellow.. he hated him some Larry and would post replies that took hours to create all aimed at destroying poor Larry.. it was too damn funny..

    my Bad!
