SUBJECT: Twin versus Single

Does anyone have experience with the handling difference between twin engines verses a single engine on a catamaran hull of 20'? I just got a 20' Twin vee with twin Johnson 70hp(2001) 2 strokes. I have the opportunity to replace the twin with a single Suzuki 140 hp 4 stroke. I'm looking at fuel consumption as being a big factor but don't know what the trade off is going to be in handling. I have seen some 20'Twin Vees with single power but want to know what the differences are. At one time Twin vee was advertising the 20' as being either a single or twin configuration.

stromboli (222.154.17.220) from OTHER says Single Motor on twin hulls
With twin motors remember the benifits: easy manouvering, safety if one motor has a problem, twin charging of batteries etc, etc, Also with twins both 70hp motors running at half throttle will be faster and less stairn on engines than one 140hp doing the same revs. Fuel saving is negligble. Istallation has to be careful and the hull will have to have a skeg structure added on to it to ease the strain/stress/force on the lower part of a single motor installation leg.
Best advice - cats need twin motors thats what their built for.

Remember that you will be cutting a lot of weight free from the stern if you move from twins to a single engine.
One thing you do not want is a bow heavy cat. Nosiree.

I have the same boat with twin '99 50hp 4stroke Evinrudes (Suzuki made them for Evinrude). The motors run great and have been reliable so far with normal maintenance. If I was to repower I think I would go with twin 70hp 4strokes as it's rated for the 140hp. I think handling is definetely better with twins. I know mine turns on a dime and handles well in rough seas.
4strokes are nice for the quietness, mileage and reliability, accent on reliability, especially with twins since I fish mostly offshore. A little more weight though.
With the 36gallon tank that came with this model, what's your range now with the twin 70 2strokes ? I've been pushing 90miles total with approximately 1/3 tank left.
I was also wondering how you plan on mounting the single on it? Do you have the taller transom without cutouts for the twins(longshaft ?) now? On mine it seems like I would need some additional work on the transom to mount a single on it.
