SUBJECT: Problem with 1 out of 10 jigs when pouring......

Submitted by kevengineer from INDIANA on

I have a problem with 1or 2 jigs out of every 10 I pour. The hook is loose. The lead is not hardening around hook shaft. What could I be doing wrong? Thanks

Kev Problem is probably lead is not quite hot enough or possibly mold isn't warm enough. Only other reason would be that you need an additional air vent. Also, how fast you pour your lead and the angle you hold your mold while pouring can be a big factor. Hope this helps. Purple worm

When this happens, I usually do two things. First, when I put the hook in the mold, I wait a few seconds before I begin to pour. This allows time for the hook to absorb some of the heat from the mold and warm up. I often wonder if a cold hook makes the lead harden just a tad too quickly. Second, as noted above, pour the lead more slowly, allowing it to flow all around the hook before hardening.

Shoot, can't edit posts on this page! Yes, I also agree that your mold is also probably a little too cool. It should be hot to the touch.

hot and no problems. Be careful!

  6. 1SG from ALABAMA says wait to remove the (Sprue)
I have found that when using high quality soft lead the hook will loosen when I hold the hook and bend to break off the Sprue.

Most times I pour several and clip the sprue off with a sprue shears or side cutters with a flush cut.
