    steering cable and tracking question

Question about steering cables, how can you tell when one is about to go bad? Or even can you? My buddy bought my old boat and said lately he can't let go of the steering when when going about 30 mph, the boat tracks straight when going no wake speed and when he is going almost wide open, it's the middle speeds when it wants to pull very badly to the right, any help will be appreciated, thanks

Sounds like the tab that hangs down in front of the prop needs to be adjusted. There should be a bolt on the top side that you can loosen and adjust this tab. It will help eliminate this steering torque.

When a cable goes bad the wheel is very hard to turn even when it's not moving. The above answer is correct.

If the wheel pulls to the right move the trailing edge of torque tab to the right. Or just change the trim angle. Most boats that I have driven ( with regular cable steering) will pull one way with motor trimed all the way in and will kind of balance out as you trim out, with motor at full trim it will pull the other way.
