I have a boat that has one decent live well.. and one bad one.. the decent live well pump has gone bad..I am trying with all my might, to just pull the hose from either of the live wells( yes I loosened the clamp).. neither of which will come off.. I was wondering if I should cut both hoses and put a tube splice in each one.. switching them in the mean time..

opinions.. comments. true facts accecpted.. please no ripping..

 just like dual light bulbs.

very tough from Jeff Hahn  4/16/2012 7:13:47 PM
It's very tough, if not impossible to pull those hoses off the pump. I would cut and put in a splice and install new pumps...the Mayfair cartridge style, so you won't have to ever do this job again.

The current hose is attached with sealant and a clamp. They do this because of ABYC recommendations for double attachment of hoses. It's less expensive to use sealant and one clamp than to use two clamps. Your options are to replace the entire hose (I would use double clamps) or add a piece of hose using a hose barb.

Home Depot, Lowes' or place that sells hose. Get yourself some good but flexible hose. Cut old hose away, install new cartridge pumps with new flexible hose. Use good clamps and marine silicone sealant.

I would put new hose on from Skipper  4/16/2012 9:53:55 PM
If it's that old, the chances are the hose is dry rotted.

It's not a fun job, but they will come off.

how do I know if it is a cartridgre pump.. from bjlc #10606 #10606  4/17/2012 10:41:28 AM
I have mayfair pumps in my boat. how would I know if its a cartridge pump.. meaning that it snaps in to place, is that correct?

Snaps...with tabs from Jeff Hahn  4/17/2012 10:47:04 AM
Yep, the Mayfair cartridges snap in place. There is a little tab on the side...maybe one on each side, that you have to compress. Then, the pump turns in the base and can be removed. Wire new pump, place in base, and rotate until you hear the tabs snap into place.

how do I KNOW if this is a replacement cartridge pump?

I would from Jeff Hahn  4/17/2012 3:06:06 PM
I would check to see if you can remove the old pump as I described. Feel around and see if you can find the tabs I mentioned. If not, you likely have an older type of pump and surgery on the hoses will be necessary to get it out.
