SUBJECT: # 26477: An enjoyable weekend on the Chippewa Flowage

Submitted by Woody from MINNESOTA on 6/24/02 11:51:00 AM

Back in April, I had invited 4 guys from work up to the cabin for an extended weekend of fishing. The weekend was the one just past. All four of them confirmed their availability and excitement of having the reknow fishing expert give them lessons on fishing for the multiple speices of fish found on the Chippewa Flowage (http://www.chippewaflowage.com/map.html).

Last Monday, one of the guys informed me that he wasn't feeling well and didn't think he could make it. This guy is 100% PW'ed and sure enough he didn't go. BTW, even though he wasn't feeling well, he managed to be at work all five days last week. LOL. Another guy discovered the had to cover for some person who was running in a marathon on Saturday, so he started making noises about not comeing. He didn't show up either. That left three of us. One of the remaining guys was bringing up his 16 ft tiller with the 25 HP 4 stroke Merc. So he fished out his boat and Jim Beam and I fished out of my boat. It was kind of nice cruising around at only 4,000 RPMs all weekend so the fella in the 16 footer wouldn't get lost.

Thursday - We fished most of the afternoon. Our target prey was muskies. No luck. Not even a follow. I'm such a shxtty guide. LOL Thursday night we had a walleye fish fry with home made french fries and caesar salad. And, lots of beer. LOL. I held my own in the 3 man cribbage tournament.

Friday - Awoke to a thunderstorm. A pot of coffee later, the storm had passed. I told the guys I was taking them out for some bass fishing. Neither of them are bass fisherman. They're walleye fisherman. Both noted that you couldn't drink much beer when you're bass fishing cuz you've got to cast so much. I took the boys up to a set of islands that are populated with lots of stumps and such. Jim Beam got into a slimer right away while throwing a spinner bait. Rounding the corner of one of the islands, I drop a pig and jig into a clump of 3 trees and I'm rewarded with a nice 2 pound largemouth. Early afternoon passes, we all have caught a few fish and enjoyed ourselves. Tonight we're off to Famous Dave's for some of the best ribs you've ever tasted. I'm still fairing OK in the cribbage T.

Saturday - More rain to start the day. Around 11:00 am, it appears to have let up enough so that we decide to go fishing. With raingear on, we venture out. I take them up the Crane River into Crane Lake. I start throwing one of Gooty's rattln shad's. It's blue with a green belly and a red highlight. Second cast, I pick up a small hammer handle (a/k/a a pike or slimer). As we cast down the shoreline, we spot a bald eagle perched on a stump. Suddenly, he takes off and nabs a small fish of some sort. All this within 50 yards of us. Jim Beam misses two bass as he's not use to setting the hook on a bass hit. He's not use to fishing with artifical bait. With live bait you don't have to be as quick. The sun comes out and we get out of our rain suits. A little while later, its warm enough to get into shorts. Pulling a few fish here and there we decide to head out of Crane Lake and move over to Crystal Lake. I've never fished this area before. Jim Beam has decided he's only gonna fish for muskies. I'm tossing a jig and pig where it's appropriate and the rattln shad where it's appropriate. Spotting a down tree that's half in the water and half out, I expertly cast my rattln shad just off one of the limbs. BANG, the water explodes, I set and start cranking. I manage to pull the largemouth outta the tree and I'm pleased to release a nice little porker. In one little run, I manage 3 largemouths and a couple of small slimers. We head home so I can grill the porketta (spiced up pork roast). Porketta, dirty rice w/ chorizo sausage and salad makes up dinner. That night, I can't buy a decent hand in cribbage. Must have used up all my luck on the water that day.

Sunday - clean the cabin and drive home. Nap all afternoon.
