SUBJECT: # 22: Spinng reel choices?

Submitted by Jerry Priebe (64.68.236.8) from MICHIGAN on 1/21/01 12:40:00 PM

Size preference: 4000?

Any techniques or tips you want to include: I will be spending more time in the warmer climes and am in the process of building an arsenal for flats, inshore and offshore saltwater use. Inshore and light offshore suggestions have been ie.Shimano Stradic 4000. Given that are their any alternatives you have used. Thank you for any info.

I've been using the Shimano Stradic 4000 reel for about 4 years now, and have had no problems with it. I outfitted it on a custom G Loomis rod, 7ft and use 10 lb test Ande tournament line. I have handled up to a 28 lb redfish and a 25 lb ling with it. The drag is super smooth and will handle some long runs from big fish. Saltwater doesn't seem to effect it as long as it is rinsed off every once in a while. I've had no break-downs. I just recently went to a 2000 for the smaller speck fishing.
  2. 6/12/01 12:42:00 PM cape cod nate (140.239.103.195) from MASSACHUSETTS says fin nor
Recently I've started using fin-nor reels. I have two stradic 4000's and thought and still do think they are great reels. Now I'm using fin-nor megadrags. they are much heavier but with the weight comes smoothness. The drag is smooth, and the feel is excellent when reeling. I also think the fin-nor fit saltwater fishing better. They are beefier and built to endure the salt and sand more than the shimanos. The megadrags do cost quite a bit more than the stradics, but maybe a megalite might be something to consider, although i've never used one. I just assume that they are quality reels just like the megadrags.

I bought some Stradic 4000's last year based upon recommendations from other fisherman. The reel is silky smooth and has performed quite well for me. I've had buddies fish with me who are die hard Penn users and they liked them so much that they've now switched.

Best deal on them is through Bass Pro Shops (www.basspro.com). They sell them in a combo package with one of their store brand rods (which I have no complaints about either) for $150. If you have one of their Outdoor Worlds or Sportsmans Warehouses nearby then you can even get a better deal. During the stores annual fishing sale (in Atlanta it's in February), they offer that same combo for $120 (reel alone costs $115).

I have fished with a few guides on the flats, all have used the Daiwa ss series and say they love them. If you want to spend the money Fin Nor Ahab Megalite's are great, excellent drag, but need more maintenance. Shimano's are a less expensive alternative but won't last as long.

i've always used various models of garcia (old style) and abu-garcia reels. i like the old 300 series. lately, i've been using the gold & black max and the 303rt and i like them alot.
