SUBJECT: # 29: Penn 10kg and 15kg

Submitted by Jake A. (4.18.224.6) from OREGON on 12/28/01 1:23:00 PM

Where does this product work best: I am considering buying a Penn 10kg or 15kg has anyone had any problems with either of these? How about the 245LD or Penn formula 10?

  1. 3/30/02 2:15:00 AM FlakMan (212.77.203.245) from TEXAS says Penn 10/15Kg Reels
I recently went sailfishing and caught some nice sails with the 15Kg reel. It's a great reel for 20 to 30# test applications. We were using 30# Ande on the 15Kg reel to catch sailfish offshore Abu Dhabi in the Arabian Gulf. The cranking speed is not like a GS555 in high gear(useful when backing down a fish or taking up line fast if fish is running back at you). The 15Kg costs a lot more too.

I have little use for the two speed feature when using only 20 to 30# test line. I just kept the reel in high gear all the time. We tagged and released 7 sailfish using the reel this way. I guess, I would get the Penn 15LD reel that is similar but a single speed reel. This would save some $$ and have less moving parts to break.

My choice is to use the GS555 in the same applications. You can get one of these reels for <$130. The 5.3/1 ratio does not bother me with the lighter lines. I have caught some big sailfish and wahoo with this reel using 30# test line. It will hold around 500 yards of 30# Ande. These new Penn lever drags are cheaper than the equivalent Shimanos so if you want a quality lever drag for a good price they would be hard to beat.
