SUBJECT: # 3: Kastmaster

Submitted by Gerry, SFHP from VIRGINIA on 9/27/99 6:18:00 AM

Color preference: Gold

Size preference: 3/4 oz

Where does this product work best: I have used it extensively in the surf for Spanish Mackeral, Striper, Bluefish and Trout.

I have also used it in the clear spring rivers of Florida for Crevalle Jack

When does this product work best: My best results have been in the summer but works year round.

In the winter this is a great lure for chasing Crevalle Jack

Any techniques or tips you want to include: The Kastmaster is very true to its name. It casts like a bullet and the distance is often its strongest point. I use a 7' foot graphite spinning rod and a reel loaded with 10 lb Fireline to get fantastic distance. Usually a slow to medium speed retrieve yields the best results.

I have caught everything from, speckled trout, redfish, flounder and spanish mackeral on that little jewel. I prefer the 1/2 ounce model, but either way it is a must have in the tackle box for those windy days when you have to set up to cast into the wind.

Caught a lot of rainbows on a Kastmaster. Figured they'd be good for saltwater.

Awesome lure. We've caught big rainbows and cuts on lakes in Colorado, bass in clearwater Lake Powell, and reds in the surf with this classic spoon. If anyone has any hints on making one weedless, though, please share it with the rest of us.

I use a gold 3/4 oz when fishing from the surf for blues, spanish, etc. It will out fish any other lure in my bag. Casts a mile, durable, relatively inexpensive. Only negative is that it tends to cause line twist. I add a split ring and swivel to the lure and then make sure I have a barrel swivel to mono connection at the leader. This adds to the cost, but helps with the twist. Combine it with an ABU Suveran, some Power Pro and a Falcon 7 1/2 foot Lowrider and you can't beat it for great light tackle surf action.

I believe Luhr-Jenson has taken over that tackle line. Their catalog lists them in a large variety of sizes and colors, including a 24kt gold model. Don't know how they compare with the Kastmaster pricing.

I thought for a while, there were to be no more available, till I happened across some in a local tackle store. For those of you much younger than I am, there used to be and may still be a product out there called a Mr. Champ. It was the beginnings of the Kastmaster I'm sure. Made identical. Only difference Mr. Champ was not available in a gold or mixed color. As I recall, it was made by Weber.. that was in the 60's and 70's. That thing was really murder on the white and black bass population in the local lake. They still do their thing on the bluefish too.. or anything that likes a flashy fast moving artificial.
  7. 4/30/02 2:59:00 PM dave ardito (204.60.97.250) from CONNECTICUT says kastmaster
I use 3/4 - 1 oz. for blues and stripers. I always use a hook with white bucktail and also add some prismatic sticker material to one side. This combination greatly outfishes a standard kastmaster.
  8. 5/13/02 9:24:00 AM k.roy (64.132.240.37) from FLORIDA says Kastmaster/Mr Champ
I add a small stripe of Fuschia Witchcraft tape down each side of my Champs and Kastmasters to better immitate Glassminnows. Sometimes it makes these awesome lures even better.

If they are discontinued, I will make a mold and cast them out of lead/tin.

Some days these lures outfish anything in my box.
