When does this product work best: I have a choice between a 1991 Yamaha 130 and a 1998 Johnson Ficht 115. The Yamaha was owned by a pilot who ran it in freshwater with Yamaha ringfree. The compression is 135 overall with less than 3 pounds variation. The engine looks perfect and has only 300 hours in 10 years. The Johnson is newer, but I am told 1 in 3 of them need new powerheads. The price is about the same. What to do?

MrDo from TEXAS says Keep looking
The Yamaha may have been kept in good shape, however, it is going on 12 years old. Seems to me that with a little more shopping you could find something newer. The Johnson ficht can only be serviced at a repair shop that has the proper computerized service equipment, ie: software, computer hook-up, etc. Not every mom and pop has this equipment. If it was a standard Johnson 115 or ocean Runner I would say get it over the older Yamaha.Lot sof problems with the Fichts.

My dad purchased an Evinrude 150 FICHT in 1998, we have had no unusally problems with it. I have heard people talk bad about them for a while now, but have yet to meet anyone who actually has a bad one. Maybe I don't know enough people.
