Color preference: You can choose any color you want as long as it's gold:))
Size preference: The reel weighs 15 oz without line and holds 340 yards of 15# mono.
Where does this product work best: I use this reel for general surfcasting. It fits and balances on rods from 9' to as big as you would want to cast. The added capacity over reels in the 965/Calcutta 400/Abu 6500 series makes this a good alternative to applications that formerly required the Abu 7000/7500 series.
When does this product work best: I like this reel for general surfcasting, but it really shines for fishing artificials at night. It is a smooth caster and the level-wind is flawless. It has a fairly moderate 4.5:1 retrieve ratio that hurts it for fishing bait at long range, and for tossing tins and surface plugs by day.
Any techniques or tips you want to include: The reel has a fairly unique braking system, rather than handling the blocks themselves, brake adjustments are made via a plastic disk on the left hand side of the spool. One quarter turn clockwise unlocks two opposing brakes, a second unlocks all four, and a third locks all four down again.

I am considering buying one of these reels and I would like a little more detail on this statement as I often find myself fishing with plugs and bait at long range. Is it that the reel will not pay out distance needed in these situations? You did say earlier in the article that it is a reel you would choose for general surf casting.
I am also considering any other reels you may recommend in this class (saltwater fishing with 8-10 foot rods for Stripers, Blues and Bonito). I appreciate your expertise and enjoy reading your evaluations.
Thank you!
