SUBJECT: rigging heavy jigs w/ single hook

Submitted by Saltfishn (216.83.100.45) from PENNSYLVANIA on

I recently purchased some heavy diamond, vi-ke, and solvkroken jigs-16-24 oz. I will be fishing for Cod, pollock, and Halibut. All of them came with treble hooks and I took them off to put single hooks on them. What is the best way to put a single hook on- to just a split ring, or a split-ring & swivel combo, or the "swivel type things" that come with the vi-ke style jigs. (I purchased some 20 ounce crippled herring jigs and noticed they came with a single hook just attached to just a split ring). Also, any advice on what types of "dressings" I can put on the single hook to make it more attractive- tube etc...? If I use Siwash syle hooks, should they be fished plain? If anyone has any insight on the best way to attach the single hook, and rig up these jigs, I'd sure appreciate it. (Thanks)

of course single hooks are more fish friendly especially when trolling or if your a school of em and removing is obviously more conveniant, but if i were going for deep water fish like cod ect. your talking 100,s of feet of water so id be using treble hooks that they come with at those depths 3 chances are better than 1 just my idea today cod fishin for me is primiarily for meat

First off,you don't want a hook on a fixed ring. The rolls cod go through will take the hook right out on the bigger jigs.I fish off the New Hampshire coast,14 oz early then switch to 9 oz mid May.50 pound cod are common with the bigger ones doing a tuna type death roll half way up.I tried a few Hernandez jigs, they came with fixed hooks,I never dropped so many fish. The red head killed them but I lost so many until I switched to a swivel base for the hook, anything over 5/0.I take the 9/0 off the 14 oz and replaced with 10/0...Took the 7/0 off the 9 oz and replaced with 8/0...I never loose them...I only fished a 1/4 of the season last year(broken Hand) and won 4 pools at 400 bucks a pop.I only do 12 hour trips and all the guys on the boat are diehards...I have won 4 "marathon" pools in a row, 2 years ago,8 pools in all for that year just because of the rigs I use.Chartreuse 6" Luhr Jenson squid teasers in the sun and blue or green in the darker skies. The bigger Jigs are done once the water warms and the herring move in.When it is dead I switch to a Solvkroken 6 oz. just to hammer the big cusk, the haddock love the little critter to.Good luck..I know the Jersey coast is tough,I bought an Avet online from Jersey and the guy kept me on the phone everytime I called to listen to the fishing on the Fingers and Jefferies Ledge,It is unreal up here for Cod and the regulations just changed on size.
