SUBJECT: Sandy Hook Stripers

Submitted by pennfreak (4.175.21.254) from PENNSYLVANIA on

Going surf fishing next weekend at Sandy Hook for stripers. Any tips on what baits to use and where to fish, besides the rip, would be greatly apreciated.

Use clam bellies and toss them in front of the beach. Quite often the water is shallow enough to just live line your clams from an anchored boat. FUN!!! If you're casting, you may need to salt them down the night before to toughen them up, otherwise you'll cast and they'll end up in England, and you'll be left with an empty hook. Use a carolina rig for this. Circle hooks are usually the way to go with these baits. I personally don't like them because I enjoy the hook set. Try casting those storm shads as well and try to match the size of the herring. I recently spoke to a guy (a sales rep from a bait company) who fishes Sandy Hook for nine months out of the year. He gave me a pack of fishbites blood worms and basically guarenteed success. He promised his first born to me if I didn't catch something. Anybody use these or have success on stripers or flounder with these things? They don't smell, and the 1/4 inch that they recommend putting on looks really small. Anyway, these fake bloodworms might also be the way to go.

I've used these for Porgies and there deadly. Cut a very small piece and use a #4 hook. Ive also caught sea bass on them incedently. Those new Gulp baits for salt water work great for everything that swims. Try the crabs for blackfish . I was suprized.
