SUBJECT: Good Fluking/sea bass and bluefish/striper set up

Submitted by Broms (207.172.241.216) from NEW JERSEY on

I was looking for some sugggestions on what to buy for bottom fish and some larger fish... my budget is in the 175-200 range for each.

  1. P Hizzle (68.38.84.8) from NEW JERSEY says yo set up
ignore the name, im a pro, one thing, if its from the shore, look at a set up like a 8 ft pole or larger, some striped bass rigs and fluke rigs will catch them, use clams, killies(for fluke) and bunker, even some large plugs can be used, like BOMBERS, and kastmastas

  2. Brett (67.82.117.192) from NEW JERSEY says All purpose setup
For under $200 I would look at an Uglystick with a ABU Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 (baitcaster) or Shimano Stradic 4000 or 5000 / Penn Spinfisher SSG 4500 or 5500 (spinning). The uglystick will hold up well to use/abuse and if you like you can upgrade later and use the same reel. The Uglystick is only about $60.

I prefer conventional reels and you wont find a better application for a conventional reel than here...

If you have time to shop around you may be able to get a good reel like a Penn International 965, Shimano Calcutta 400 with an Ugly Stick in your price range.
