HI, as a family we normaly vacation with my inlaws in pgh, this year we will be over in august at ventnor right on the beach, can anybody tell me what sort of tackle I need on the beach, or from local wharfs etc, I will probably buy a rod there, and bring a reel with me, but any links to nj web sites or advice would be good, 10 days and time to kill will drive me nuts with a 10 year old to keep occupied, what can we do from the shore,

barncle boy (68.60.252.73) from PENNSYLVANIA says From Shore
Try the ocean inlets with rock jetties that are flat so the child won't fall. Cut mack. or bunker (menhaden) should get you some bluefish, which pound for pound are great fighters. Also, bottom fishing in the inlets often yeilds summer flounder.

I am from the jersey shore, and have lived here my whole life. I believe ventnor beach is around AC? Bluefish are always around in the summer months. Baits: squid, bunker, eels, spearing, and almost any other baitfish caught locally. Jetty's and inlets are usually the best bet if fishing from land. Weakfish, striped bass, fluke, tautog, sea bass, bluefish, scups can all be caught from these areas. Be aware of fishing regulations though. http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/pdf/2006/maregsum06.pdf --this will inform you of the regulations. http://www.vitinc.com/nn/freport/freports.html----- some various fishing reports from new jersey

Bill K (69.142.230.155) from NEW JERSEY says Fishing in Ventnor, N.J.
There is a newly opened fishing pier in Ventnor. You can find information about it when you get here. Use your search engine to find Ventnor New Jersey fishing pier. For a change of pace, try for crabs. It's a fun way to spend time with a youngster. Boxtraps and droplines are the most common ways to catch them. A good batch of blueclaw crabs can be cooked and then picked and eaten. Wash it all down with a few "pints" and you'll be in heaven. The kids can also fish for "snappers" (small bluefish) in the bays and rivers. Dad can fish for (mostly) bluefish and flounder (fluke) from the beach with bait or with lures or plugs. This website also gives some information about that part of the state. http://www.thebassbarn.com/ Have fun.
For tackle, you may want to think about spinning gear. Fishing from the beach or pier, a rod of about 8'-9'is ideal. Line size is from 14lb.to 17lb. The terminal tackle and rigs are best bought locally. There is no license needed to fish in the saltwaters of New Jersey.

Bill K (69.142.230.155) from NEW JERSEY says Ventnor Fishing
Nigel: The pier is an ocean pier (I think). If so, bluefish, croaker, fluke (flounder) are the most commonly caught species. You may have to drive, but not too far, to find a bridge or bulkhead or even rent a rowboat to catch the blueclaw crabs. I don't know enough about the area to be more specific. The snapper bluefish can be caught on light rods and line with small hooks and a piece of bait (usually a small frozen baitfish or piece of squid) fished under a float or bobber. It's a great entertainment for the youngsters and the youngster in all of us. For some adult entertainment, try one of the casinos in Atlantic City. Great fun even if you just walk along the boardwalk. How do you feel about France in the finals of the World Cup?

nigel (81.79.207.6) from United Kingdom says looking brighter!
Hello Bill, I am getting pretty wrapped up about this trip, started off I was going to buy rods there, but I will be taking a selection now, I have a 6ft rod tube that I can squeeze 3/4 into, our rods break down into 2/3 parts, and from what I have seen and brought at Dicks sporting goods in PA your spinning rods tend be 1 peice, but hey ho, I hope to come prepared, you are so right the child in all of us hankers after a bit of fun, I have caught fish by the ton and right up untill 10/12 years ago,but thats another life away, and now I am as happy as hell to drown worms and talk to my son......so snapper blue fish sounds good to me!!!I am reliably informed the casinos are shut???something to do with the city budget not being agreed??? staff wages/? I dont know,.... the board walk....I have been told to wear sunglasses....so I dont get accused of staering...HA,HA, but its all part of the vacation...no not the learing, just the looking, well thats what I tell the wife!and as for France, well good for them, its all down to the day really, we had a lot of injuries, leading up to the cup and its what any team dreads, we did not do as good as we could of, but there you are,any way, Blueclaw crabs...best way to cook/prepare/ serve,.......advice anyone......

Bill K (69.142.222.90) from NEW JERSEY says Vacation
Boil the crabs. Some people add beer to the water along with Old Bay seasoning, celery. Some people just boil them in water. You've gotta catch the crabs first. The casinos will be open. The state had budget problems. You'll need the sunglasses for the beach in Ventnor not so much in Atlantic City. There are a few tourist type fishing boats in Atlantic City (Gardiner's Basin) which feature very easy going fishing in the bay on a pontoon boat for fluke or croakers or fishing on a bigger boat in the ocean for bluefish. Explore and investigate. Ask questions at a local marina or bait store for good directions. The best boardwalk for the kids is the one at Ocean City. Lots of rides and games and families.

Bill K (69.142.222.90) from NEW JERSEY says Ventnor
I just got back from A.C. and saw the Ventnor Pier. I didn't get a chance to check it out but it is an ocean pier. I'm not sure about the fees though. From the looks of it, I would say that your list of fish to try for is limited to searobins, fluke, maybe some kingfish (local name), bluefish (if they come in close enough). The trip Paul talked about looked like the best bet. You have to go to the fish and a boat is still the best bet. Good luck.

Jim (152.163.101.8) from NEW JERSEY says vacation
Nigel, It's a lot less $$$ to go to the super market, buy a package of chicken necks and backs, tie them into the crab traps and watch the kids run from the little critters when they "chase them down the dock" , as my 8 year old puts it.

nigel (81.79.207.6) from United Kingdom says thank you N.J
Never did get on a party boat,or pier, had a brilliant time surf fishing on boundery between Atlantic and Ventnor City, was staying on b/walk @ Vassar Ave,had many very early mornings and the best morning was ray, shark, and other, every 10 mins on mackerel, all catch and release, but its a credit to NJ, fisheries policy for the sport, I had the best fishing ever, only 1 hook, on sliding trace, by the time I sussed it, the best morning was a ray/shark/ other, every 10 mins, all catch and release, single hook, sliding trace, just hope we get invite next year

Bill K (69.142.222.90) from NEW JERSEY says You are welcome
Glad you had a good time. Vacations are too short. There is a lot to do in New Jersey. Those of us who live here very seldom have enough time to see and do all that the state has to offer. There are many fishing places I still want to explore in our state. Fishing opportunities are boundless (except during the winter). I thought you might have cooked up a batch of fish and chips with the sharks (aka dogfish) you caught from the beach. I hope you enjoyed the experience. Come back again!

nigel (81.77.98.220) from United Kingdom says year gone by

I am hopeing to be fishing off Vassar square at the beginning of August again, I intend to give the beach a good bashing based on what I learnt last year, no blood worm, just lumps of mackeral for ray/shark, can anybody suggest if I can do much in the water behind the board walk. and if there are fish there...whats the best method? all suggestions welcomed

Lena (71.175.13.243) from PENNSYLVANIA says things to do w/ 10year old
Nigel --Kids at age 10 love the Jersey shore. Mini-golf is everywhere. There is a new indoor wave -pool at one of the hotels/casinos. Magic shows and (kid-rated) circus-type shows. Ocean City (ca. 5 miles south) has a huge carnival on their boardwalk, no liquor allowed, family friendly, lots of food choices, a day's activity at least.
You can rent small skiffs and go crabbing in the bay, I recommend this, we used string with mini-hooks, it's a blast. Put fish or meat for bait. It's sooo fun. Finally, there is always the wave runner rental (rentals are on the internet, check Somers Point and Ocean City, as well as Brigantine).
You can go on a "Party (fishing) Boat" for a day from Atlantic City. Or you can rent an ocean kayak, knock yourself out, for a day. It's also fun to use a small wave board and one can spend an entire day doing this.
There's lots of interesting shopping now in A/C, the city is undergoing a revival of sorts. Check out the outlets, and the new pier, you'll find out when you get there. Pick up a little beach newspaper (free) for more.
Enjoy! Lena

nigel (81.77.98.220) from United Kingdom says >)))))))>
Hello Lena, thanks for your comments,I have been checking another web page, and found quite a lot of info as well, A rental skiff sounds fun, ....loads of sun block!! I will take a serious look at that, it looks like we will be in a motel for 2 days up at Mays landing, so the family can shop in the mall,....then we get to chill the rest of our break, our two live on body boards, but your sun is deceiving, .....just hope the breeze don`t drop at night, being on the beach made the differance last year with no a/c, it was almost ....pleasant,
Rgards Nigel
