SUBJECT: Return visit

Submitted by nigel (81.77.98.220) from United Kingdom on

Hi every one,
I am lucky enough to be returning to Ventnor at the begining of August, and will fish the beach early mornings, out of curiosity can some of you give some advice on where I can buy squid and mackeral ? and do plastic/soft baits work in the surf ? any advice is valued,

Regards Nigel.....UK

Hello again. Welcome back. I hope you remember what to bring from your last visit. I know there were places you never visited last year. As far as your question about bait is concerned......your best choice, I think, would be to go to a local supermarket which might have frozen whole squid in the frozen foods department. If you can get to a large supermarket (Shop Rite, A&P, Stop and Shop, Acme)you will find what you are looking for. You will have to search a bit for a "bait" store. I don't think there are any in Ventnor. Read the "yellow pages" of the telephone book for a listing of bait and tackle stores. The recent fishing has been good for the fish you are targeting. By the time you get here, there should be some "croakers" in the surf. They are delicious. Be sure to get to the boardwalk in Atlantic City and see the new sights.

Hi, yes its a sharp lesson that you learn fishing any where new/differant, and I was a bit p/o`d it took me a couple of days to crack the beach, based on what I got told to use/do last year at a local outlet,...any way "croaker".. bottom feeding? up in the water?

  3. Bill K (209.158.162.114) from NEW JERSEY says N.J. Fishing
Croakers: Bottom feeders primarily. A small hook #1,#1/0 with a weight of appropriate size attached to a 3-way swivel should do it. For bait, a strip or ribbon of squid hooked once through the tip will do. You may also catch a flounder or sea robin or skate (ray) or sand shark as well, with this rig. Sometimes a small cork is put above the bait to keep it away from the crabs. If you are lucky, a stray school of bluefish might invade the surf. Fish more often to improve your odds and also your tactics. As you know, it's a big ocean so anything you can do to improve your odds of finding fish will usually pay off.

thanks for that,I did buy a ready made rig last year, 2 hooks, one above the other, I guess they are a 1, but the flouro coloured corks attatched, kind of did not convince me!! so they are still in bait box!! in the pack, ....perhaps this year!
