SUBJECT: Surf Fishing Help

Submitted by Rich H. (71.4.196.35) from NEW JERSEY on

I just recently bought my first surf rod, 10'6" medium/heavy & spooled up one of my shimanos w/ Power Pro 50 lb. What's a good assortment of surf lures for bass (plugs, pencils, plastics)? What should I buy to start off without breaking the bank. 6"? 9"? 4"? Oz's? Also when dunkin' bait, what's the adverage weight you use in the surf? 4-6 oz pyramids? Can I use fishfinder rigs that I would usually use on my boat? New to the surf game, love the advise.

Hi Rich: I'll try to help. There are some things you can read and try to digest about surf fishing, but a lot has to do with being at the right spot at the right time. A lot has to do with a feel for what you're doing and how much time you want to put in. This is the best time of the year to be a surf fisherman. The fish are migrating along the coast and you just have to follow them.

For starters: A surf bag of some sort is an essential item to carry lures etc. along the beach. A length of rope (1/4" polyprop is fine)for dragging your catch along the beach back to the car. Plugs will depend on the action of the rod you use. 10'6" is probably going to force you to use heavier plugs unless the action is more on the medium side. Wooden plugs (swimmers, pencil poppers, etc.) in various colors (with black, yellow, and white) all good. The lighter plugs like 6" Bombers will be hard to throw even with Power Pro. Plastic shads like the ones from Tsunami and Storm are good bets too. Again, weight is important for longer casts. Bluefish do chew them up so bring a few bags. 6" shads are the largest I'd use. Leader material can be heavy mono attached to a barrel swivel with a duolock snap (large)at the end to attach lures. Metal lures like gators, hopkins, crippled herrings etc. are all good at one time or another. Pliers are essential. Needle nosed pliers with a line cutter will do. Waders are essential for obvious reasons. The newer lightweight ones are now more preferred over neoprenes.

You will at sometime buy another rod and reel. It will probably be around 8' which is kind of a standard for plugging. Sinkers are of various sizes as well depending on surf conditions. 3,4,6, even 8oz. pyramid style are all good. A sand spike for bait fishing is another need to have item. Fish finder rigs come in all kinds of patterns. Buy one or two and then make your own.

For more answers to your questions, post your questions on the NJ Reports page. Everyone there is very helpful. I don't read this forum too often but I'm glad I did to try to help you out.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate the info. I just picked up a new pair of light-weight waders, old ones sprung a leak. I was assuming that I would need around a 10ft rod to flip the plugs/bait out there, didn't know 8ft was the ideal for lures. It's all trial and error. I'm used to boat fishing but no longer have my boat. Thanks again for your help!

Didn't want to piss anyone off on the reports page by posting this there.
