SUBJECT: Looking for private tuna charters

Submitted by Rich H. (4.37.64.164) from NEW JERSEY on

Hi all, Me and a few of my buddies are looking to set up a tuna trip. Just looking around for private charters, no party boat 20-30 + person mess. If anyone has any good suggestions please feel free to post a reply to my message. Thanks!

I believe there's a few boats like the Gambler that run 14 man trips for tuna. Most will do them it just costs money and probably less than you will pay for a good private charter split among four. Trouble is usually in finding the guys. While some of the party boats can truly be a mess a few are quite well run. It may pay to book one of those limited load trips. People willing to pay the extra cash are usually quite serious about fishing and usually pretty courteous to their fellow anglers. I used to like 6 pack charters myself but once you run the numbers compared to a well run party boat it just doesn't pay off. A good private trip with a nice size boat will run close to 2k or more when all is said and done and your still talking about a boat that is less than 55ft and usually mcuh less. To make the trip comfortable would require a max of 4 fisherman and that costs. Jamming 6 guys into the back end of a 35ft with wind against the current and lines going under the boat can get just as bad as a party boat and maybe even worse in my eyes and if you hit the rough stuff you'll know it and it still costs. With a limited load party boat run your looking at 15-20 guys on a 80ft boat where you can fish 360 degrees around the boat so even wind against current is workable and it is stable even when the ocean starts kicking up. 4 guys can be jigging up front and 10 guys can be working baits off the back, *ell, even if all 14 guys are working baits in the back you'll still have a ton of room (20ft? across the back)and most if not all of them will know what they are doing. The more I go for tuna the more I start to appreciate large boats, especially when its time to relax. Have gotten caught in some serious stuff out there and thank god I was on a "big" party boat. Could only imagine the white knuckles on the private charter boats that were out there. Just an opinion, but run the numbers and you may see that hiring a party boat can be very rewarding.See what they want to take her out, then divide that up by how many people you want/how many people you think can comfortably fish her and you are looking at similar or better numbers to a good private charter with alot of benefits that a small boat can't give you. Take care and good luck with the charter.

I highly recomend Benchmark Charters. Captain Nick neuberg is the finest I've met in the business. He is at Newjerseysportfishing.com .

There are a couple I would recommend...out of Manasquan would be the Jenny Lee, just love that boat...they also have a website if you want to check them out...the other is based in Cape May...Ugly Mug charters...I've fished with one of the captains a couple of times, talking about calling your shots...knew not only when the fish would turn on but when they'd turn off as well...he's (they've) been written up in a couple of the saltwater sports journals as well as the locals...

    Hope this helps...

    DaveS
