My grandparents have a place down in McAllen, TX and we are going down there the two weeks after Christmas and I was wanting to know what kind of fishing (if any) would be good this time of year. We have never fished saltwater before (always bass fishing) and I would like to go after some reds or speckled trout. Any tips, suggestions, locations, etc. would be recommended. PS: We will have our boat with us (20' 6" Nitro w/ 200 Merc) because we are also going to try Lake Falcon, Choke Canyon, etc.

It is very good this time of year. Less pressure cause everyone else is hunting. Launch at Dolph Thomae Park, Arroyo City and go to the mouth of the Arroyo. Head North a little ways and drop your trolling motor around county line. Work the edge of the ICW just as you work a structure for Bass. You will probably catch a few. I wouldn't bet too far out of the ICW in that Bass rig. Saucer and Three Islands area has deeper water if you want to a little drift fishing.
