SUBJECT: Brutal Cold Coming for Xmas
Submitted by
Tidegauge (69.153.20.27) from TEXAS on
Heads up on brutal cold due to hit the 23rd. Here are my predictions. Dallas will hit 5 degrees on the 25th. Corpus will hit 26. Everyone north of a line from Laredo to Houston will be at or below freezing starting the 24th for 72 hours (turn off your water if your traveling for the holidays). Snow or ice the 24th from Laredo to Houston. We'll see a bad fish kill. Boat and waterfront real estate prices will fall for the next two years. Half the guides will go out of business. Baffin becomes Brown Tidesville for years like it did after every other fish kill. This is real! Check the GFS weather model. It's been consistent with this for the last 8 runs.

Tidegauge (69.153.20.27) from TEXAS says The weather Channel is terrible
Natural Gas futures jumped over 40 cents today. The real weather forecasters work for the energy traders not the Weather Channel or the government. Our private forecaster is going bonkers over what's going to happen beginning the middle of next week.
The GFS, Mr. Question mark, is the USA flagship weather computer model that's run every six hours. It's one of several computer generated forecast. The English, Europeans, Japan, Canada, and even Russian have their own model runs. When they all start to agree 5 to 10 days out they are usually on to the right forecast. You can find the models all over the net but my favorite is this site. http://michaelsager.com/weather/modelnew/imageloop.html

Yeah and monkey's may fly outta my butt.
To have a fish kill you need very warm followed by a fast, prolonged, subfreezing cold spell. Not cool followed by cold.

It's not even going to freeze in S. Houston let alone on the coast.
By the way, why would freezing weather affect real estate?

Larry Bird (64.12.117.14) from TEXAS says Accuweather Says........
Brutal cold reaching all the way to the TX coast but not as cold as the 83' freeze. Keep your fingers crossed. Could be interesting.
-
kenny (4.226.60.18) from TEXAS says I'll show you brutal............
Get a grip fellows.
The forcast low for Thursday is 33 degrees, so it may freeze at IAH.
Yeah an Artic front is coming and it's going to be bitter cold in Kansas and Amarillo but not here.
In '83 it froze quickly and never got above freezing for two or three days. We had lows like 12 degrees.

jwr (24.162.57.227) from TEXAS says '83 vs. '89...
I think some people are confusing these two years. '83 was bad, but '89 worse.
Ice storm in Feb. '89, drizzle, froze at night, thawed a little during the day for about a week, minimal fish kill/pipe damage.
Dec. '89, bad ass mo fo, about a week before Christmas, snow, ice, single digit lows, big fish kill, plumbers made a fortune.

Larry Bird (152.163.100.5) from TEXAS says 83' Was Worse For Fish
The Brazos River just north of Waco froze over and ice piled up like icebergs in the bend of the river. I would have never believed it unless i had seen it first hand. It stayed below freezing here for nearly a week. Many more salt water fish were killed during 83' than 89'.

jwr (134.163.253.126) from TEXAS says 83 vs. 89
I think 83 was worse up and down the Texas coast, but from what I remember 89 affected the Galveston complex worse; at least from my recollection from fishing.
83 brought about the 10 fish 14" minimum limits, and 89 the 15" minimum on trout.
Didn't it get down to 7 or 8 a couple mornings at Intercontinental during the Dec. 89 freeze? I know it snowed it's ass off in LaPorte.

Ranger Bob from TEXAS says Freezes in the Houston Galveston area.
In 83 it stayed below freezing for something like eleven days in Houston. Can we say stunned fish on the beach front.
89 was a bad freeze with an ice storm and it snowed in Florida but was short lived compared to 83.

Tidegauge (69.153.17.66) from TEXAS says Walkerdog and Bowhunter
What's the weather channel saying now Walkerdog? And Bowhunter, is that Monkey noises coming from your britches? Tides are very low, some of the coldest weather in years is headed towards the coast and it looks to hang around for several days. Anyone who fished Baffin in '83 (there wasn't very many of us) knows what happened for the next three to four years. That's why real estate prices dropped, Kenny. Why go sit around on a pier and do nothing. Today's midday GFS run is showing a band of snow from Laredo to Corpus and south of up to 12 inches on the 24th. Now that is hard to believe. Hope it doesn't come true.

kenny (66.142.140.45) from TEXAS says Get the For Sale Sign....
Tideguage,
Looks like you are right and I was wrong. Friday night in Houston it is forecast be in the low 20's with winter mix possible.
Kingsville shows a low of 26 degrees Friday night.
Unfortunately this last several days has been a warming trend which may have brought a lot of trout back into the marsh and flats.
I guess the question now is how many hours Thursday and Friday night/morning will it be below freezing.

Gater (68.201.205.183) from TEXAS says Just my opinion
Two or three days of freezing weather should not have an effect from dying standpoint. Its not the air temperature you need to be concerned with, its the water. I don't think 2-3 days of freezing temps is going to lower the water temperature enough to kill fish. My biggest concern, and I'm willing to bet the TP&WD biggest concern is not from the cold itself but from wiping out of entire schools (by recreational anglers) that congregate in winter time holes such as Offats and the Army Hole. Yellowmouth (69.151.111.225) from TEXAS says Dead Fish
It only takes 42-44 water temp to start putting fish in a shock. HavE seen mullet swimming sideways and upside down at these temps.
