$$ $$ $$ From: Shelby (64.12.116.138), NEW JERSEY Kevin....we feel your pain!!! Surf fishing may be the answer. Or...find some really wealthy fishing friends.
Cost of Boating/Fishing From: Ed Brown (151.203.100.110), MASSACHUSETTS Kevin,
I understand your predicament although I no longer own a boat. I had a very small boat, 14' runabout with a 40 HP Merc but I sold it last August. Even at that size the expense did not justify the amount of time I was able to actually use the boat ($1200/yr for the slip, $300 yr/Insurance, winterizing, shrink wrap etc) It was more a function of time (wife works full time, I work full time, 4 kids, sports etc)though than money because obviously that little boat was not costing me anywhere near what your boat is costing you. I have been trying to organzie a Charter with friends and Brothers-In-Law but can't get enough guys together who are interested in splitting the cost. I have recently applied to waiting list for 2 Charters here on the South Shore (The Relentless out of Green Harbotr in Marshfield and Blue Moon II out of the Neponset Marina in Dorchester) that offer "Shared Charters". Here is how it works. You contact the Captain and indicate the type of fishing trip you are interested in. He will usually give you a list of dates and you have to pick out the dates you are available. The Captain then puts your name on a waiting list. He will then contact you when he has enough "singles" to put together a trip. The cost is between $125 4 hour half day Inshore Stripers and Blues to $175 full day 8 hours Off Shore Cod/Haddock. Of course I would rather fish with friends or family than complete strangers because if the other guys turn out to be jerks then you are stuck with them for 8 hours but the alternative is not fishing (except from Shore of course.)
I also agree with you about going out early. There is something special about steaming out early in the morning. It is peaceful and serene and the day seems filled with exciting possibilities in terms of what the catch will be, where the fish can found given the conditions, what strategies will be sucessful etc.. Given that you already own what must be good sized boat if you are fishing Stellwagen maybe the Shared Charter doesn't interest you but I thought I would just mention it for your consideration. Best of Luck.
fishing From: kevin (65.160.83.210), MASSACHUSETTS Ed I would not be interested in a charter but I would be interested in finding some fishing friends who share my love for groundfishing and I also have thought about getting my captains license and doing charters but then I am not sure if that will take the fun out of it..
Fishing buddies From: Paul (24.147.244.28), MASSACHUSETTS Kevin, I hear you about the costs of fuel. I have a 25' cc and I'm always looking for someone to fish with. I striper fish, groundfish, and go for the football tuna out of Ipswich Bay lets talk. To add a remark to this report click here.Click here to return to report
