Whales From: Bill K (209.158.162.114), NEW JERSEY We saw lots of whales last summer about 10 miles out. There was lots of bait in the area and the whales were right with it. We also had one come up about 50 yds from our boat just off Elberon a few years back. We watched that whale gorge itself on bunkers. When it came up into the school, there was a huge hole where the bunkers were. It was truly amazing!
These whales are mostly baleen whales which ordinarily feed on plankton and krill etc. They will eat whatever is around however. Since bunkers are plankton eaters too, I guess the whales are getting a bonus with their meal. Once the water warms up, I guess the bunkers will attract the sharks like they did last year.
The next thing to consider is if the "whale huggers" will put observers on boats around Mantoloking to protect Moby like they did in the Shrewsbury River last year to protect the dolphins. Why is there no media frenzy about this whale? I guess there will be if someone thinks it might be hurt. There's no parking along that stretch now. If it hangs around and stays in close, the cars and tourists will come. It could be a real circus like it was in SeaBright. If the media brings a camera crew, it can be worse. Don't give them any ideas. To add a remark to this report click here.Click here to return to report
