Dan, do most of my fishing from a boat.Although , I've fished the inlet on both sides & caught fish. The point pl. canal is fun to fish .You'll find parking areas along it.

If it's ocean surf fishing you're looking for, practically all of the beaches are open to the public early in the A.M. until the lifeguards and badge checkers show up. Parking is usually the biggest headache. The Manasquan inlet or Shark River inlet have access all day on both sides. Point Pleasant has metered parking along the seawall and Manasquan has timelimit parking on their side. You can walk out on the jetty or fish from the rail (the western end seems to be the best). You can also wade out into the river from the doggy beach when the canines are not there. Up the coast, you can fish from some of the areas around Asbury Park. Down the coast, Island Beach has beach fishing as well just pay the entrance fee.

The area around Seaside Heights and Ortley Beach are worth investigating for snappers, croakers (on occasion), and crabs. There is at least one pier on the bayside. Just a word of advice while fishing or crabbing on the bay side, bring your insect repellant. The greenheads bite and hurt.

The Pt. Pleasant Canal has fishing as well, but it takes some local knowledge to fish it properly. The areas at either end of the canal are a bit easier to fish. You have to explore. There is a pier at the south end of Bay Avenue for crabbing and fishing. There is a pier near where the old Pt. Pleasant Hospital used to be, just off River Road and Herbertsville Road. You have a shot at some fluke and weakfish sometimes. Check Mapquest.

There is a small state owned piece of property next to Spikes Restaurant on Broadway. It's a good place to take the kids for snappers. There is a dive school there as well. Brielle has a small fishing dock next to the drawbridge that is good at high tide for snappers and an occasional fluke. Not far from there is Stockton Lake on Stockton Lake Blvd. just off Route 70 in Manasquan. When the tide is full there are people fishing for snappers and crabbing later in the summer.

There used to be access to the Manasquan River just over the 35 bridge on the southwest side. There was an access area to pull off but that, I think, has been changed with the new bridge construction. You still might be able to walk in there but will have to park somewhere else.

Once the fall rolls around, all of the ocean beaches open up and access is readily available for the migratory species like bluefish and stripers. As most guys will tell you, if you don't get seasick, get on a partyboat and fish for 1/2 day or a full day. Otherwise, just keep searching for your own access or do as I always do........ask the local kids! It's tried and true!

Docco, I go on vacation on 6-26 for 10 days so I will be out every day I can with this weather it's a challenge. If you and the other two captains want to jump on let me know. Tony has my number so call him and get it then all you'll have to do is use it. Capt. Joe

Count this captain in! Let's set a date and get out there.
