Lost & Found From: Bill K (209.158.162.114), NEW JERSEY
I always enjoy the fishing reports and the little bits of wisdom that guys share about fishing. What I enjoy reading the most are the fishing related anecdotes such as the unusual catches like the tool belt or the umbrella rig.

We've all lost something overboard and the bottom of Sandy Hook and Raritan Bays must hold volumes of stories about each item. Imagine dragging a grapple or a magnet along the bottom of the bay to discover what the most unusual item would be.

This could be a fun thread if everyone who reads this offers something that they caught (other than a fish)while they were dragging a bait or lure through the water. I've caught fishing rods and reels(minus the fish)and an unmarked(no high flier), abandoned lobster trap while trolling(minus the lobsters).

Losing things overboard, while unflattering as it may be, also has the makings of a great story like the guy who yanked so hard on his outboard's starter cord that the outboard fell overboard.

The most unusual one I've heard of was the guy whose rod and reel was pulled from his sand spike by a striper. The rod and reel with the fish attached was caught by a boater who was just off the beach. The rod and reel(without the fish) was returned to the owner after the owner wrote his phone# in the sand for the boater to read. You can't make these things up.

Any comments?

unexpected catch From: Don (157.150.192.237), NEW JERSEY
Several years ago, when I was baitfishing for stripers at Sandy Hook, I pulled up a broken rig with a keeper fluke at the end. The fish was really skinny. Guess it had been tangled there for days.

Back in the mid 90's fishing aboard the same boat (Misty Morn) we were drifting for fluke in the Prince's Bay area. Anyway, I reeled up what at first appeared to be a human hip bone (ilia). However, upon closer inspection it appeared to be more likely a dog ilia.

On the flip side, the most pleasant surprise I ever caught was in the late 90's aboard the Capt. John. Once again we were fluke fishing this time in the channel in front of Earle. I reel up a nice #3 one clawed lobster. Coupled with my lone keeper that day it made for a nice dinner.

Nice job on the lobster! I've seen lobsters win pools on some fluke boats every once in awhile. I've never caught one though. Did everyone get quiet when you reeled in that bone. I'll bet it would have been really dramatic if there was a pelvis attached!

As for human remains.....I've never caught any of those either, nor do I want to. I must say though that when we fish in N.Y. harbor for stripers, I'm always on the alert when my line gets tight. You never know!

I guess the guys with all of the stories are the commercial draggers. I'll bet they have some that are really interesting.

strange catches From: Kenny (192.19.195.82), PENNSYLVANIA
Strangest thing I ever caught in Raritan bay was a sea turtle! As big as they get. Was claming for stripers and something kept stealing our baits. I thought crabs of course, but then I hooked into something really heavy. Knew it wasn't a fish, felt like dead weight. When I got him close we could not believe our eyes. Luckily he was hooked on the side of the shell. The fight was like the end a battle with a tarpon. I'd get him close, he'd take off, repeat... and hissing at us every time we went to unhook. Pretty wild.
