light tackle From: Clint (67.81.228.65), NEW JERSEY
How do you guys keep such light jigs on the bottom? I fish the Nav with bait and need at least 1.5 ounces to hold bottom. That goes up to 3 ounces when we have a good drift. Thanks

Light Tackle Response From: Cliff (138.89.41.145), NEW JERSEY
Clint We fish light freshwater outfits spooled with 10# Power Pro. Fishing a 1/4 oz to 1/2 oz jig is fairly easy with this type of tackle, and more sporting to say the least. Granted, there are times when the current does run fairly fast or we experience a strong wind vs. current condition. At these times we do drag rigs with 1 1/2oz of weight, but the majority of our fishing is done with either 1/4oz shad darts or small 1/2oz jigs. We explore the river when the usual spots aren't producing and at times locate new hotspots, as was the case yesterday. BTW, when you say that you fish the Navesink and require heavier weights, just exactly where do you fish? We usually fish the area surrounding the Oceanic Bridge with the majority of our fishing occuring in depths of 5-15 feet and very rarely do we have any extreme current situations that require heavier weights. E-mail me if do not want to discuss your favorite spots in an open forum. Cliff
