Back again on 11/5, another good day. From: Jim Balicki (71.187.5.30), NEW JERSEY Fished from @10:45AM to 4:45PM. Same spots and same lure as yesterday. 10 stripers, 20" to 27", and 4 bluefish 2# to 4#. Bill K was there and fished a very long day -- I think he arrived more than 3 hours before I did. Visible sandeels were in the shallow troughs. Apparently that is why blind casting w/ a metal lure, that imitates a sandeel, is effective. Many of the other fishermen chose to use a teaser ahead of their main lure, ususally metal. I did not use a teaser at all, so that I could max-out the casting distance. In the AM this was really important as the stripers were beyond a sandbar. In the later PM, we waded out on that sandbar, but in the AM, we had to staay back and cast over the bar.
Stripers From: Bill K (76.116.198.219), NEW JERSEY I enjoyed fishing with Jim today even though he "took me to school" by outfishing me. I arrived for the early bite and should have stayed in bed longer because the "bite" didn't start until the tide started to drop. It was best at low tide when we could get out on the bar. Jim's lure with the green tail was the ticket today. I had nothing in my bag that even resembled it. I fished right next to Jim and had to shake my head as he was constantly into fish and I could barely get a bump. Sandeels were everywhere and you could see them swimming at your feet on the falling tide. There were very few visible splashes or swirls and blind casting was the only way to find them. One flyrodder put us all to shame as his incredible sandeel pattern took bass after bass right next to us. He was gracious enough to give me one that I'm dying to try as a teaser. Speaking of teasers, the fish were more interested in the metal especially Jim's lure with the green tail. It was not a blitz but everyone was catching fish. They seemed to be spread out along the beach for quite a distance. The clam guys were not catching as the fish were choking on sandeels. They were spitting them up as they were being unhooked. These were healthy 24-27 inch fish that were very fat for their size. One more thing, last week's heavy surf made for a high tide bite. The calmer conditions like Thursday, kept the fish on the other side of the bar where they waited for the sendeels to wash off the bar as the tide went out. I learn something every time I fish and what I learned today was to get a lure just like Jim's. To add a remark to this report click here.Click here to return to report
