N.J. Surf From: Bill K (76.116.198.219), NEW JERSEY
I'm assuming you're talking about the N.J. surf. There will be lot's of debate on this one because of various factors. One thing to consider is price and frequency of use. Another is what technique you want to use.....bait fishing, plugs. I use an 8'one-piece custom graphite spinning rod that I built which I use for plug and metal casting. Most guys who do a lot of casting use rods from 7 1/2' to 9' and line tests from 12-17 pound test with reels that balance the line and rod. Two-piece rods are popular for travel and storage. Longer rods are used for bait fishing, mostly. You have to decide what you want to do. Prices vary but you get what you pay for. Other expenses are waders, a surf bag, pliers, plugs, metals, etc. Again, you decide. If you are serious about fishing in the surf, go to a reputable store with a good inventory and speak with someone who knows the inventory and who fishes himself. Stores around the shore area have the biggest selection. Shop around and stop by the beach to see what everyone is using. You'll find that just about everyone you meet on the beach is friendly and willing to help.
