Report:
I was vactioning in Maine and decided to try out the local fishing. Not a bad time !

My father and I were casting from a commercial fishing pier in the area and caught eight to ten atlantic "horse" mackeral in an hour's time. They look kind of like the spanish mackeral down here on the Gulf Coast. They don't make a big hit when they first strike, but really start to fight when they get near the dock. We caught them on silver spoons and spinner baits. No leader required. It seems that they'll hit almost anything, since two other fishermen were using baited hooks drifted below the surface.

I was really surprised by the apparent lack of interest in saltwater rod& reel fishing there. There are hardly any tackle shops around. Does anyone know why ?
