Report:
Boat Tornado left the dock in Monterey ~5am with 9 anglers and loaded up bait tank with mix of "pinhead jack mackeral"(~4" long) and "trout size" sardines. Ran out about 2 hours to the albacore grounds and saw some birdlife and began the 1st troll team. Within minutes port stern corner rod starting singing with a purple/black cedar plug daisy chain. One fish hooked up straight under boat just as boat slid to a stop on a fish trap swimbait. Fish milled around under boat 20-60 ft down but wouldn't touch hook baits except for one swing & a miss. Went back on the troll but fish didn't show anymore in the morning. In afternoon Capt. Donny ran over a meter mark, circled and starting chumming. He gave the word to let em go and started soaking baits. After a while of chumming and soaking finally the words "fresh one" rang out in the stern. At the same time there was a hook up on a fish trap on the bow down about 60 ft, but it came unbuttoned after a couple of runs. A slow but steady pick bite started with fish being very picky and avoiding heavy line, big hooks and heavy sinkers. Most bites on 20 lb test, fluorocarbon leader, small size 2-4 hook, and no sinker (or a split shot only). Birds troublesome on surface picking off baits, with sharks just under surface slicing off lines and even one seal or sea lion taking one bait. If bait went down, down, down, it had a chance of getting bit. Fish bit right up until the time the word to "wind em in it's time to go home" with literally one last minute fish. Ended the day with 11 albacore 20-30+ lbs for 9 anglers.
Good Luck, Deadly Dave
