Report: Launched out of the point in Pascagoula. Wanted to head way south, but the forcast called for 3 footers. I don't like to push my 18' Sea Chaser too hard, so we headed for the Gas Rigs South of Petit Bois. The first 4 rigs had boats on them. We hit the Murphy rig about 8-9 miles SE of Horn Island pass. We put over a chum bag and the action heated up quickly. I had never used ground up chum before. It was amazing to me to see snapper come up to investigate. All we had was cigar minnows and squid. The smaller snapper hit furiously. I finally coaxed a 20+ pound sow to take my cigar minnow. The outfit I was using was brand new. By the time I got it dialed in, she had me wrapped around the rig leg and broke off. We ended up with 2 kings 10 & 15#, 5 red snapper 3-5#, more spanish than we cared to keep and 1 grouper right at 22". We were happy with the trip even though I got schooled by the sow. Next time I go out I'm taking live bait. Anyone know of a good artificial for snapper?
Spanish fillets From: Ambus (12.77.134.153), FLORIDA are very good bait for snapper. The fillet should be between 8 to 10 inches long. About 3 inches wide at one end and 1/2 inch at the other end. Hook it one time about 1/2 inch from the narrow end. Also try spliting the fillet from the wide end, about 2/3 of the way, to the narrow end. This way the fillet will have more movement.Good snapper fishing hole From: Gabe (205.188.200.201), MISSISSIPPI hello i read your post i'm new to the area and I have access to a 20ft boston whaler. do you have GPS numbers for the rig you went to or any other good snapper spots.
