Report:
Waited for a couple months for salmon to show again in Monterey. Got the word that the summer run of big salmon popped up. Couldn't stand it and took the day off (7-9) to check it out for myself. New Holiday left the Monterey Wharf at 6am sharp and headed off in search of the 'bite'. After a short run the boat circled around an area and finally stopped. Anchovies were baited up and dropped down with 4 oz mooching weights. "Hook up!" cries starting yelling out all around the boat. 20 lb class salmon starting hitting the deck. Amid the chaos was a small boy on vacation from Truckee, CA just watching and waiting for a bite. After putting one in the box I had a second fish take the bait and start running with it and set itself on the circle hooks. I called for the boys dad to send him over and handed him the rod and just watched his expression as the fish tore off down the port side. He landed a nice fish. Later he caught his second fish all by himself. At mid-day the action slowed for the doldrums. The fish went back on the bite in the afternoon and some 30 lb class fish came over the rail. Heartbreak was an understatement at the loss of two large fish by one female angler. She kept at it and managed to get her limit of 2 fish with a combined weight over 50 lbs! When it was time to go in the boat was only 6 fish short of limits. Anglers had plenty of time to talk about the 'monsters' that got away. That one boy will go back to the mountains with plenty to remember. It's not all about 'how many' you caught. Helping others catch their own fish brings a different type of satisfaction.

Good Luck, Deadly Dave
