Report:
8-6-2001 Left Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey on the Checkmate with 9 anglers and loaded the bait tank with 3" anchovies. Headed out in clear weather only to disappear into the fogbank. Slow bite in the am with mostly single jig strikes. Mean Joe Green and Loco Joe clones were hot jigs all day. Fish Traps, chrome dart and bait worked on the slide. Fish wouldn't come to the boat in the morning even with chum. They stayed about 50-100 yds off the stern. Afternoon bite saw 5 troll lines light up. Fish came closer and closer until they were boiling 20 ft off the stern. Flyline or a small sinker, size 2 or 4 hook and 20-25 lb line were the ticket to an instant pick-up on the bait. Fish bit right until the boat left to go home. Boat total was about 55 albacore with avg size 20-23 lbs and range of 15-35 lbs. Saw only one commercial troller and the partyboat Tornado in the area. Fishable for a large boat but it was rock'n'roll with rods falling down and tackle boxes flying around on the way home. The bait bite is starting to heat up but trolling is still hot.
Good Luck,
Deadly Dave
