# 40848: Subject: Monterey, California

Submitted by Deadly Dave (ip 206.170.2.224)

Water Temperature: 60?
Water Clarity: Clear, blue
Seas: 5-7 ft
Weather: Foggy in morning, some patches persisted throughout day. Calm wind in morning then wind came up late morning and built up to 20 kts by afternoon. Easy ride downhill in am but bumpy ride uphill in pm on return home. Swell and windwaves pounded boat on return trip.
Fishing_for: Albacore tuna
Boat: New Holiday
captain: Nick

Report:
Called Chris' Fishing in Monterey on Thurs 8-16 and asked how fishing was. Chris said the albacore were 'thick as mud'! Weather didn't sound bad and they were sending their biggest boat so I decided to go.

Capt. Nick left the dock at Monterey Fisherman's Wharf with 17 anglers with a tankful of mixed size live anchovies on Fri 8-17. Surprisingly there was very little wind on the way out to the tuna grounds. There was a good sized swell but we were running downswell most of the way. We put some troll lines in after a couple of hours but still kept moving along at a fairly fast clip ~10 kts. It seemed we were running to a hot bite already in progress. Finally, slowed down in an area of partyboats and managed a troll strike with a single fish hitting a jethead plain cedar plug. Kept going as this was not 'the hot spot'. Ran across a partyboat stopped near a huge flock of birds with rods bent. Deckhand Vic started chumming as the starboardside passed the birds and the starboard corner rod starting singing zzzzz's. Lines with baited anchovies were dropped in and rods started hooking up like dominoes up the side of the boat. Capt. Nick threw some serious amount of chum and had the fish flashing right under the stern down about 20 ft. A lively bait flipped downwind on the stern with a size 2-4 hook, 25 lb test and a 1/4 oz weight was bit before leaving the stern area. Some used a bit heavier weight up to about 3/4 oz.

Some fishermen did not get a bite amid this hot bite! Investigation into their frustration revealed their problems. Several were using 1/0 to 2/0 hooks, way too big for anchovies on this bite. Changing their hooks to a size 2 improved their luck immediately. One person still could not get a bite and the diagnosed problem was too heavy a line and too big a hook, about 40 lb test with a 1/0 hook. When he switched to 25 lb test and a size 2 hook he landed 2 fish to save the day.

A large number of fish were lost to tangles and 'burned' off lines due to the large number of novices on board. The fish were 'thick as mud' and re-rigging and putting the line back in resulted in another hook up right away. Everyone got to pull on fish and landed at least 2 fish. The size range was about 12-25 lbs. The boat total was 71 albacore. About a half dozen fish were caught trolling, one on a Megabait iron and the remainder on live anchovies. A good mid-season trip with a pod of porpoises and a whale sighted near Pt. Lobos on the way back home to Monterey.

Good Luck, Deadly Dave
