Report:
Ahoy there one and all! Well the wind finally, FINALLY FINALLY gave us a break!! And what a break it was!!! We ran outside of the Half Moon Bay Weather buoy (you can get the weather report from this buoy at this web site: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=46012 ). I look at this report every day as it can give a good indication of how our day will be, especially when we fish within a couple of miles of it like we did today. I have been cringing at the reports from this buoy all week hoping it was going to tell me that the weather was going to lay down and allow us out.

When we put in the lines and started to troll there was not really much bait around but I did see some good looking "RIPTIDES" forming which is what stopped me there (wonder why!!). We were not in the water long when I heard from the deck FISH ON!!! When I got back to the stern steering station (the RIPTIDE has three steering stations) we had three fish hanging and from then on it was pandemonium! At several points we had no lines left in the water. We were hooking fish and losing fish as well. What spectacular action! Both Heather (my deckhand) and I were working up a sweat trying to keep up with making bait, scooping fish and dealing with the tangled lines.

Boy were these some scrappy fish!! We did not hook and monsters but overall the fish were about 12 to 14 lbs with some smaller ones mixed in - overall the quality was excellent! When I judged that the deckhand had been sufficiently covered in slime we counted the fish and when the counting was done we needed one more for the crew! Well these fish travel in groups and we had another multiple hook up. Looking over the side and trying to judge which we were going to keep and hollering at the others to get their lines out of the water!

We got all of the gear on board and were heading back in!! I looked at the clock and it was 9:50 AM!! FINALLY the deckhand and I were able to catch our breath and share in a well deserved high five! Gosh I hope these fish and the wind gods will allow this spectacular fishing for weeks to come!!! Tight lines!

Capt. Smitty
