# 45354: Subject: Pacific Ocean, So. Cal, California Submitted by Capt. Skip Driggers (ip 12.80.23.84)
Water Temperature: 62 Report: Capt. Mike was at the helm until the wee hours of the morning when he awakened me and tried to get some sleep for himself. Not long after putting in the trolling jigs I noticed a .3 degree temperature break and worked the edge a bit for nothing. Still going to the south (we were about 70 miles from home) I saw breaking fish and soon had a jig strike which turned out to be an 8# pacific bonito (delicious eating but often overlooked especially when the quarry is albacore). Next hook-up was another bonita, this one about 11#. Then, finally, we were hooked-up again, this time to our first albie of the day. A fine tuna of about 10 pounds. Often the first fish of the year are on the smaller side with the big ones following later on in the year. We got lots of live chum in the water and did hook one fish on bait but the angler dumped it, so we put the jigs back in and started to work the area. We were bit again on the troll as soon as I trolled back over the spot of the first longfin hook-up. This time the school came to the boat and were boiling on the chum but would not take a bait with a hook in it. We might have been better off with more anglers so that we could have had hooked bait in the water quicker. Oh well... A half hour later we had a double jig strike on albacore and again the school came to our chum with lots of boils and even some clearing the water chasing bait. I hooked a sardine thru the nose, cast it out, and put it in the rod holder with the clicker on while I gaffed the first troll fish. It was bit before I even had the gaffed fish in the boat. The angler who brought in the jig caught albie was pretty quick in switching to a "bait mode" and was bit immediately. However, he was sawn off by our 2nd angler (somewhat inexperienced) still battling his troll caught fish. The two lost fish took the school with them when they vacated the area. We wound up with a handful of nice albacore to 15# and 3 bonito to 12# for the two anglers before weather and weather reports ran us out of the area. Not too bad for just 2 folks.
