Report:
Headed past Montauk 180 to Butterfish Hole on Saturday. 200 feet and 64 degrees. Started chumming for sharks. Had a few competing slicks in about an 8 mile radius, but many sharks around boat after about 2.5 hours. They wouldn’t hit the baits (bluefish-whole and filets) at 30 60 or 90 feet. One huge mako swam by about 6 feet from the back of the boat, and a very large blue shark kept finning near an inner bait. I finally took a whole bluefish and dropped it to the bottom. After about 10 minutes he hit and a 30 minute fight ensued with a blue dog that measured a little over nine and a half feet from tip to tail. Both the shark and the angler were pooped at the end. He also had the widest head I have ever seen on a blue shark. I wasn’t in the MMB tournament, but I wish he had been around for Star Island. No more hits for another hour so we picked up and headed in over absolutely dead calm wind and oily seas. Only hit a slight chop when we got into L.I. sound. I hope that the days are like that for tuna season.
