The interest in tuna fishing is starting to get serious. The most serious is in the vicinity of the
Ranger wreck, where the bluefin action was red hot the end of the week. The fish were a little
harder to find on Sunday, and when they were located, they were not exactly “eager eaters”, but
at least there is potential there. The crazy thing about it is how closely the secret was guarded,
with many captains not aware anything was going on. Further offshore, there are reports of
longfins, yellowfins, mahi, and even the occasional blue marlin, although I haven’t heard of any
one area that has been red hot.
Mako fishing was so good early last week that you had to be pretty unlucky not to hook up with
one. Most of the action was east of the 14630 line and between the 43700 & 750 lines. By the
end of the week though, the action dropped off, with more blues being taken and only the
occasional mako. But I bet if someone would spend a little more fuel and try for sharks out
around the Ranger, the makos would be numerous once again.
If you have ever dreamed about owning a charter boat down in the tropics where the billfish are
more numerous than bluefish, I’ve got a deal for you. There is a 32’ Blackfin in Guatemala that
has been just put up for sale. It’s got twin 3208’s, a great crew, and is priced less than a hundred
grand, with the duty all paid up. That duty bit can be a killer, because in Central America it is
typically in the fifty percent range. If you’re interested, check back with me and I’ll give you
some more info.
