# 49901: Subject: Hudson Canyon, New York

  • Fished on 8/16/2003
  • Report received: 8/18/03

Water Temperature: 80
Water Clarity: clear
Seas: calm
Weather: Clear skies, light winds, and warm temperature made this trip a pleasure as the 80+ mile ride from Fire Island to the 100 square area of the Hudson Canyon's "East Wall" was covered in a scant 3 1/2 hours of cutting through flat calm waters in the air conditioned comfort of the Mind Games salon. Most of the crew were able to sleep for the ride out and were ready for battle upon arival.
Fishing_for: yellowfin tuna
Boat: Mind Games
captain: Donald Bangs

Report:
The trolling was poor, with a few Skipjack Tuna caught and released. The reports were bleak as during the trip out the Capt. spoke with many returning boats with few favorable reports. The Capt. told us that a few boats had done well and maybe tonight we would be one of the "hot" boats. Well he was right. We tied up at 8:00 P.M. and started to chunk Mackeral, Sardines, and Butterfish. Around 9:00 P.M., after making sure everyone new what to do the Capt. went to get some rest. It would be a short one as at 9:30 the fish came, and came, and came. The Yellowfin were in the 50-80 pound class and from a stationary boat we fought a strong current to get the fish in. Our success rate was tremendous as only one fish was lost at the gaff, with two others spitting the hook. Our four man group limited at 3:00 A.M. as a double header hit the deck. The Capt. kept the chunks flowing and called in a another Capt. he knew to tie off on our stern. When this was acomplished we turned of our fishing lights and let the other boat take over were we left off. We all showered and change and spent the last hour or so of darkness rehashing our night and watching the fish hit the deck of the boat behind us. At first light we uncoupled, pulled up our anchor and had the shortest 80 mile ride home that I have ever had.

I might add that I have never seen anyone call in another boat and let them tie off and take over the chunk line as our Capt. did. As he explained to us, everyone pays a large price to come and get the fish and we had the good fortune of "slamming them" and why not let some other group get thier money's worth. Hey, when you put it that way, why not. Most other boats had little or nothing, and as the Capt. pointed out having the fish find you can make a big difference, I'll say!!!!
